QFN: what it means.
Quad flat no-lead describes a package whose contacts do not extend outward as conventional long leads. It belongs to the surface-mount package vocabulary used to describe a component’s physical assembly. (Texas Instruments: packaging terminology)
No-lead does not mean no electrical connections. The contacts still need the correct board footprint and assembly process. Package dimensions, contact arrangement and any additional pads must be checked for the exact part. (Texas Instruments: packaging terminology)
Put the definition to work.
Do not select a board footprint from the letters QFN alone. Compare the manufacturer’s dimensions, pad arrangement, pin count, and any exposed-pad requirements.
Questions to ask next.
Use these questions as a reading checklist, not as a device-selection recommendation. Exact manufacturer documentation takes priority over a general definition.
- Contact layout and pitch
- Exact drawing and recommended footprint
- Pad functions and assembly requirements

Common QFN questions.
Is QFN interchangeable with QFP?
No. QFP is a different package family with projecting leads. Similar names do not establish the same footprint, dimensions or circuit function. (Texas Instruments: packaging terminology)
