Integrated circuit: what it means.
An integrated circuit brings devices such as transistors, diodes, resistors and capacitors together within a semiconductor component. Integration matters because the devices and their connections form a working circuit, rather than a collection of unrelated parts. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
Keep three levels separate: semiconductor describes the material; transistor describes one kind of device; integrated circuit describes an interconnected circuit made using such devices. These names are related, but they are not interchangeable definitions. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
A bare die is an unpackaged semiconductor chip. Packaging happens after wafer processing and dicing, so the visible package is not the same thing as the die it contains. Infineon distinguishes its bare-die products from chips that have been packaged and tested. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
Put the definition to work.
For a reading exercise, compare a simple analog function with a programmable control function. Both can be implemented as ICs, but their intended jobs are different: the phrase “integrated circuit” describes integration, not one fixed function. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
Start with the part number and datasheet to identify a particular component. Do not assume that a package's appearance tells you whether its contents are a processor, a controller or another circuit. This is a documentation checklist, not an identification method based on a photograph.
Questions to ask next.
Use these questions as a reading checklist, not as a device-selection recommendation. Exact manufacturer documentation takes priority over a general definition.
- Identify the function from the manufacturer part number and datasheet.
- Separate device-level ratings from package dimensions.
- Check pin assignments, supply requirements and operating limits.
- Use the broader IC guide for types, uses and package terminology.
For the broader explanation, read the complete integrated circuits guide. This page defines the term; the companion guide connects it to the rest of the system.
Common Integrated circuit questions.
Does IC always mean a processor?
No. Integrated circuit describes interconnected devices on semiconductor material. It does not restrict the circuit to a programmable processing function. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
Are a die and a package the same thing?
No. A bare die is an unpackaged chip. Packaging is a separate manufacturing stage following wafer processing and dicing. (Infineon: semiconductor glossary)
